Double Glazing: 2000 Years of Window Evolution
Windows probably first developed as simple holes in the walls of dwellings, allowing ventilation and light in, and a view of any approaching danger. It wouldn’t have taken long to work out that to have a fabric of animal hide covering, would allow the window to be open when you wanted it to be, and closed to the elements when it was too hot or cold. Some form of shutter would have been the next improvement, enhancing security, too.
The earliest known representations of windows come from Egypt and Assyria, depicted in Egyptian wall paintings and Assyrian reliefs.
Glass Windows, and the evolution of Double Glazing
Wikipedia suggests that “The Romans were the first known to use glass for windows, a technology likely first produced in Roman Egypt, in Alexandria around 100 AD.” Within a couple of hundred years, while using windows in their public baths, the Romans developed double glazing, which cut down their heat loss.
2000 years on, one can only wonder why the majority of Australian homes still use inefficient, noisy, energy-wasting, expensive-to-run single-paned windows!
